Our engagement story...
Kelly and Nathan were engaged on April 5, 2007. Theirs is a thrilling tale of elaborate surreptitiousness and exciting subterfuge...
Nathan dropped Kelly off at work that morning so she has no choice but to be picked up at the end of the day. Nathan rushed away to pack Kelly an overnight bag and checked into a suite at the Marquette Hotel in downtown Minneapolis. That afternoon, he picked up Kelly and surprised her with a trip to Psycho Suzi's, the tiki lounge where they had their first date. She got her second surprise with a trip to the Marquette to "have an evening to chill out." Luckily for Nathan, Kelly bought it.
Nathan and Kelly had access to the Hilton executive lounge on the 19th floor, overlooking the beautiful Minneapolis skyline at sunset. Nathan had planned on asking Kelly to marry him at dinner, but after spending time in the lounge, he decided it would be the perfect place. On their way out to dinner, the server thanked them for coming. Nathan told her they would be back...
After dinner at McCormick & Schmick's it was back to the executive lounge. The room featured only five other people - the server, an elderly woman, and three business men who complained about the hotel. The louder they got, the more Kelly wanted to leave, but Nathan persuaded her to stay until the whiny pencil-pushers finally left.
Nathan asked Kelly to help him recall his nicknames for her: Kiddo. Baby. Scarcastro. Rhinoceros (she head-butts him a lot). Then came Kelly's final surprise as Nathan pulled out a ring box and said maybe it's time he adds "Wife." He popped open the box, held up the ring, and Kelly started to cry. Nathan went down on one knee and asked her to marry him. She didn't say "yes."
She said, "Of course."
Nathan slipped the engagement ring (that he picked out all by himself by actually listening to Kelly's tastes!) onto Kelly's finger and they kissed. The server stopped by and asked if they were okay. They said absolutely then as she walked away, Nathan couldn't contain himself. He proclaimed, "We just got engaged!" The server said congratulations, then paused until it truly sunk in : "...Oh, you mean right here?! Right now?! Oh, my!" She told the elderly woman and the two of them flipped out: "And we were here! Oh, my!" Then they gave Nathan and Kelly wedding ceremony ideas. Thanks, ladies.
The next morning, the freshly-engaged couple took the downtown sky-walks to Kelly's mother's office to share their news. Nathan's parents and brother drove up that day for Easter (part of his elaborate plan!), and they, along with Nate's sister and Kelly's brothers and sister learned of the engagement together.
Our engagement was sweet and memorable, a moment we'll always treasure.
